Junior “A” Hockey Arrives at Ice Line While Junior “B” Team Departs for Nationals

This past week has been an exciting time for the Junior Flyers organization as their Junior “B” team has secured a bid to the USA Hockey National Tournament and the league has recognized the programs success by awarding the club a Junior “A” franchise in the prestigious Atlantic Junior Hockey League for the upcoming 2008-2009 season. The Junior “A” program will look to draw players not only from its own Junior “B” and Midget Major programs but from top organizations and through strategic affiliations with programs throughout North America and Europe. Asked how he feels moving the program forward Coach Dave Dorman comments, “It’s an exciting time for the club and more importantly for the top local players in our area. We see a lot of very talented local players leave to seek other options and we look to change this trend with offering what will be one of the finest junior hockey programs in the country. The Junior Flyer name is synonymous with excellence and this latest endeavor will be nothing short of that. The coaching staff and I eagerly look forward to this challenge.” Coach Dave Dorman will officially be announced Head Coach of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League team and Director of Junior Hockey Operations once his team arrives home from USA Hockey Nationals. Coach Dorman along with Coach Nick McCreary will also continue guiding the Junior “B” program.

In only their third season and second under Coach Dorman’s guidance the Junior “B” team is currently ranked 4th in the country in an online coaches poll and is determined to finish well at Nationals. The Junior team is working hard this week in anticipation for their trip to Marlboro, MA to play the top Junior “B” teams in the country. Junior “B” Nationals will be held in conjunction with Tier III Junior “A” Nationals in an effort to maximize exposure for the players. The Juniors secured their birth to Nationals by defeating the New Jersey Titans 5-4 and overcoming three separate two-goal deficits in the game. The team had many opportunities to give up but showed tremendous character and fight by scoring four goals in the third period for a gritty come from behind victory. Coach McCreary comments, “The only obstacles these young men will see in life are the ones they set for themselves. They know what it takes to be champions on and off the ice and how to overcome adversity.” The goal of this group from day one has been a trip to Nationals and the players would accept nothing less. Coach Dorman would like to express his heartfelt appreciation for everyone involved with the Junior Flyers and Ice Line staff.

I dont know that prestigeous is the way I would describe the AJHL but its a good stepping stone till we can get some Tier I or II junior around here.

N snipe from what ive heard around iceline Dorman wont allow his players to play high school because they will be on the ice pretty much every day and traveling every weekend of the season.

Being a full time student would be very tough. I think the teams travel on Friday's so maybe taking just Tuesday and Thursday classes would make it easier.

i believe you have to limit the amount of credits that you take when playing juniors. IF not, you can use up eligibility for college.

Yeh you couldnt go to real college but you could probaly get away with taking enrolling in a community college. I dont think you would lose eligibility based on that.

I'm pretty sure the only way you lose eligibility is if you play for your college team. I went to school with a couple of guys that kept extra years of eligibilty because of academic probation. So I'm pretty sure it's just wether you play for the team or not.

I belive the ruling is that any semester in which you are enrolled in 4 or more courses (12 credits or more) it counts against your college eligibility. You may take courses while playing Junior, but it must be less than 4 courses. Obviously you hope the courses you take are transferable to the college of choice at a later date.

It is unlikely that any college student can be a full time student and play this schedule. First and foremost the student needs to be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits to remain on his or her parent’s health insurance. Would anyone want to play this kind of schedule without health insurance? I know USA Hockey supplies liability and excess medical insurance, but the medical comes in to supplement the player’s primary health care.

There would be no eligibility used up for college hockey if a student played on this team while attending college full or part time. College eligibility is used up while playing college hockey, 4 years for NCAA and ACHA Division I and 5 years for ACHA Division II and III.
