LaSalle "4-1" over Ghost great game entertainment wise....big hits nice saves especially by the Ghost goalie. Great breakaway goal by the young Seravilli to tie the game. The reason I have the score in quotations is because of some of the goals. To me, it looked like Ghost took the 2-1 lead in a goal that was called off by a mysterious unheard whistle. LaSalle ended up taking the lead in the game, and the third goal it looked like a Ghost player was tripped behind the net as he gave the puck up to where a LaSalle player was waiting to snipe to make it 3-1. Not taking anything away from LaSalles win, it was a great game

Whistle or no whistle that puck never completely crossed the line before the LaSalle defensemen cleared it. The other play was close ....but not a trip. The LaSalle player had his stick firmly on the ice and the HGP player skated into him. good no call.

I listened to it on the radio, they said Tyson got game winning goal. But I heard they announced someone different at the game. Who got it?
Who was selected MVP? According to radio announcers they watched replay and said it wasn't a goal. |

Tyson had the game winner. Schmidt had goal #3 and Tyson had the empty net at the end. First goal was a beauty by Schnupp. The announcer at the game got a few things wrong. On the Schmidt goal he announced 7 from 11 instead of 11 from 7.

Was anyone else surprised by Ghost's gameplan for the game? They kind of went to something we used to play in college when we were clearly overmatched - we used to call it "pick and dive". It consisted of us setting up a forward at the opposing team's blue line all game hoping for a breakaway and then diving to draw penalties to put us on the power play as much as possible. I thought Ghost was overmatched going in, but with how their goalie played and the fact that La Salle was snakebit for the first two periods I didn't think they needed to use such a desperate sort of gameplan. As for the goal that was waved off - TV broadcast clearly showed it sitting on the goalline even after the whistle went. Also, La Salle had a goal called back in the first that went in on a quick whistle from the ref, so that went both ways. As for the third goal - as a defenseman you can't try to steal a call from a referee near your own goal line. I'm sure there was some contact, but that kid went down like he was shot (and then performed a full barrel roll) trying to draw the call - HGP did that a couple of times with success during the game (including the younger Seravelli miraculously recovering from an extended dive during the third when a shot that went wide hit him during mid-writhing in pain behind the net; Italian soccer stars would have been proud) but you can't risk a move like that around your own net. Regardless, Berardi keep them afloat and La Salle showed trouble hitting open nets when they were there, but they managed to pull it out in the end. Hopefully they have their scoring sticks with them in Johnstown. This message has been edited. Last edited by: plym_20, |

Holy Ghost needed to go with something dramatic in terms of a game plan and did just that. The game plan was clear and the players stuck to it, regardless of whether you, I, or anyone agrees with it. 1-1 game with a few minutes left in the third? I'd say it worked as they had hoped.
If Lasalle feels like it got the short end of the stick in terms of officiating (which it probably did), just wait until Johnstown. |

The other thing I didn't quite understand - Nick Seravelli not challenging a single La Salle defenseman one on one in the entire game, instead settling for weak wrist shots on 1 on 1 rushes for most of the first and second period. The HGP coach inbetween the 2nd and the 3rd said he felt their best chance was to stretch the ice and try to go 1 on 1, because he thought La Salle's defense was weak - yet his best player is not trying 1 on 1 (especially with his speed). I thought that was odd. Nick Seravelli was generally not a factor for pretty much all of the afternoon; I thought Tom Seravelli and Hoffman had exceptional games. I thought both, if they can learn to control their emotions a little better, can be dominating players next year. |

Plym,
I am surprised that you would assess the HGP game plan as "desperate." I don't think that the plan was set in action just for the sake of getting breakaways. The gameplan of having a man out in the neutral zone was used to disrupt LaSalle's flow in the offensive zone. As you know, because youve obviously seen LaSalle play several times while sporting your 1987 La Salle jersey, La Salle sets up a lot of their scoring from working with the point man. Get it back there for him to fire it, and crash the net. HGP forced them to play 4 on 4 in the offensive zone, and for the most part, it worked. So I wouldn't call it as much "desperate" as "effective." I mean, despite what you wrote about the game, it wasn't exactly a blowout. I think HGP was overmatched, because I've seen both teams play in games prior. But I think HGP hung in that game, and at times, looked like they could have stolen it. To an outsider who had never seen either team play, like the guy I watched the game with, LaSalle did not seem overly dominant. This is because they could not set up their normal flow in the offensive zone. HGP played a great game and should be proud of their successful season. As for the diving, well... let's just say... watching HGP get every call is something you get used to when you play, coach, or root against them in the LBCSHL. But... if the shoe fits... right? Either way, I don't know who you are to call a kid out for faking being in pain behind the net. He did get hit back there, and was down. Maybe when the puck came back to his stick and he realized he was in the Flyers Cup final he decided to play through the pain. Maybe, maybe not, but your commentary about it is pretty ridiculous either way. Do you think LaSalle wins next week if they play the way they did today? When I saw them crush Judge last week, I didn't think that anyone could beat them, but now I think a team from out west can. They seem to have that potential to choke big time. Thoughts? |

Nick Seravalli was given a different assignment tonight. He played for defensivly trying to lead his team in the d-zone, opening up room for his teammates in the offensive. Thus opening up a breakaway for his cousin. I have to applaude HGP on changing up a gameplan and taking their best offensive weapons and making them play a different game. Sometimes your best is not good enough and that is alright but I thought that goal was deffinitly in for HGP at the beginning of the third. Lasalle played very well none the lessthey were given a huge scare. |

I thought HGP's game plan was well thought out, and almost worked. Berardi played very well, HGP put 4 players down low on D and disrupted LaSalle's cycling and got to the rebounds before LaSalle did. In the second period, LaSalle looked completely out of sync.
Pyne played very well too, and came up with big saves. In the third, the whistle did blow before the puck came loose from Pyne, and it did not appear to cross the line anyway from where I was seated near the goal. LaSalle did catch a break there, but there were a couple of other early whistles with loose pucks as well. Good luck at States!!!!! |

You have applaud both goalies. Steve Berardi had a great game, and Dan Pyne made some huge saves in the 3rd, both kids really showed that they are big game goalies.
As far as the game, the coaches felt Lasalle's strength was their aggressive forecheck, and their ability to feed the points for shots once they gained control. With only one point, its takes them off their game. Also, with Lasalle's speed, Holy Ghost's breakout could have been less successful. So its easier to get the puck into the neutral zone to an open forward with tons of ice where anything can happen, proved by Tommy Seravalli's goal. I thought it was a great gameplan by the Ghost staff, and I think it was the reason that it was so close for so long. Ghost has had alot of success on the power play this season, but couldnt get anything going. Thats a credit to Lasalle, because their pk was great yesterday. I thought it was a great game, and no one gave Ghost a shot, and they proved they could skate with Lasalle, but werent as strong in the end. Congrats to Lasalle on one of the most dominating seasons in high school hockey history, good luck in Johnstown! Congrats to Ghost on a great game, and a great turnaround to their season. |

Great game played by both teams. I thought Holy Ghost's game plan was very effective and not at all "desperate." As said before, it helped to disrupt the flow of LaSalle and, along with their great goaltending, is an essential part of what kept Ghost in the game. Despite Ghost's best effort, LaSalle was just too much for HGP and in the end, their overwhelming talent prevailed. Great game by both teams and good luck to LaSalle in States.

I don't have Comcast, so I couldn't watch the game. Will a replay be on CSN? I did listen briefly on the radio and they said attendance was the best in the history of the tournament. Can any one tell me the total in attendance? I'm just curious. By the way, I was just checking Wikipedia.org and some presumptuous Ghost fan prematurely added Holy Ghost as the 2008 Flyers' Cup champions. Take a look.
