Im sure it could happen. There has to be some connection though. Most kids that go to a public school for 2 years are not that inclined to transfer to a private school, because they are already in their comfort zone. Usually when this happens, they know alot of kids through club hockey or growing up, or to a school where they know the coach. Its rare you see a kid transfer out of the blue to a private school around here. I can think of 1 kid that was very talented (a huge difference maker) that transferred to Malvern for his junior year, then transferred back to his public school the following year. Bottomline, yes its possible, but it doesnt happen much already, and there has to be some sort of connection. |

wow now this is a nice conversation. many of the points are 100% correct. i believe the most important factor driving the talent drain on this area is the lack of "exposure" for those kids that are talented enough to play at the next level. comb the rosters of ne preps and you will see an all star team of kids who left just for the opportunity to be seen. if these kids stayed and migrated instead to local teams( the big 5 as suggested) then we would have good hockey, our sons at home and money in our pockets. the question of how is more difficult. first, piaa sanctioning and school support are a must. second, higher level coaching on many teams, professional men who have tradition and contacts to help kids. look around at other sports in the area and you see coaches who have real understanding and integrity in their sport, whether it is reinprecht in field hockey, morris in basketball, etc.. when they promote an athlete they get heard. overall, the level of coaching, evidenced by quality of the programs not just their play, is deficient. finally, the league representatives, including the president and the board, should do a better job of networking and promoting the kids, especially in light of the weakness in coaching. only when we stop the talent drain will the area become the hockey hotbed we know it has the possibility to become.

crusader,
you are right. Exposure is the key and why kids leave this area. Maybe if some of the kids that have played the higher level of hockey and know many coaches and have good contacts could come full circle and come back to coach a high school program. I would much rather have my kid play for a coach that has experience then play for some guy that took the coaching class and thinks he knows it all. Each team should have someone giving the kids info on different schools and guide them somewhere much like what Bud Dombroski does for the Jr Flyers. |

It's happened enough that I wouldn't call it Rare. Kenny Wochele Frank Cocco John Cocco George Stevens Brian Newman Tom Newman?? Mike Pergolese Rob Cocodrilli LG Gattison Matt Balke Chris Gosik Jared Sidman Robert Gray Chris Longwell T.J. Coyne Ta Ung?? Chris Moore That's just off the top of my head |

Matt, I would consider Wochele an out of the blue transfer, but I believe LG Gatison always went to Lasalle. Alot of those OHara and Carroll kids had friends from club hockey, so they didnt just pick a parochial school and transfer to it. What I meant was very rarely do you see a kid just end up at a private school, without knowing kids there from club, or the coach from club. |

L.G. played a year at Wissahickon before going to LaSalle.
There are many reasons why kids transfer to private schools, I was just pointing out that it's happened almost 20 times in the last 7 years. I didn't say it was right or wrong or justified or not.....just listing players that transfered from public to private, and in a few cases private to prep. |

Happens sometimes the other way too though. Tom Hawkins and Shane Lewis are two off the top of my head.

Sure does, Stevens went back to Methacton for his Senior year and Moore went back to C.B. West.

That is what Keith Primeau is trying to do with his D.H.I. tournament. Having worked with our high school football team, our coaches make DVD/VCR tape high-light tapes for their players. Then the players send them off. Why not approach Keith Primeau? Ask what can be done and how people can help? Why not contact the Flyers? Many NHL teams help community programs. I think the first and most important thing is to have one governing body for the area. That will end a lot of the bickering and squash the egos. Then why not contact Congressman Pat Murphy? I just learned that he played and captained his team in college. I have contacted the P.I.A.A. and they look down their nose at hockey, but if a Congressman backs hockey it may help swing the pendulum in hockey's favor. I know the P.I.A.A. will mention Title 9, but the truth is that the fastest growing sport for girls in the US and the easiest way to earn a athletic scholarship is in ice hockey. Take a look at some of the women's college teams and you will see many girls from the area on the roster. They didn't have a problem getting exposure. Last thought. . . why not start a grass roots petition to get the PIAA to sponsor hockey? |

Why not stop typing in bold? Haha jj you do make some good points, some might be a little far fectched but there in the right direction. Actually I think its a little thing but I like the fact all 3 games are at the Spectrum this year, I think its the first year that happened. Allthough I think to get a little better crowd they should push them all back a couple hours. |

I picked the BOLD from HGP fan. It gives good contrast and separates all posts. Why did you call me "jj?" |
