Like always, I enjoyed the magazine. I agreed with about 95% of the players selected for the League All-Stars, Player Awards, and 1st-4th team All-Breakaway. Matt, since your not on the ice, sitting on the bench, or in the locker rooms, choosing a sportmanship award for the entire Delaware Valley must be hard. What was it then that made you choose Ryan McLaughlin for this award? I'm not saying it was a bad choice, I just want to know what your reasoning was.

Good question...It is the hardest of the awards for me to choose.
In the past, I have used things like "low" penalty minutes,(kind of how the NHL chooses the Lady Bing Award) but that doesnt always tell the whole story. You mentioned that I'm not on the ice, bench...etc, But I do spend time in the penalty box taking pictures, so I do see and hear things that others might not. This year I was set on a kid from south jersey (I wont mention his name), but he had low PIM and had good offensive numbers. In a playoff game he took a tripping penalty (not something that would take him out of the running), but as he sat in the penalty box, all he did was curse at the ref....I happened to be in the same penalty box and heard it with my own ears, so I took him off the list. I was scrambling to find someone to give it to and had a few "nominees" from different leagues. I was having a few beers with some SHSHL board members a few weeks back, and brought it to their attention that I needed to fill that spot. One of the gents mentioned Ryan as a good candidate and two others in attendance agreed....so I went with it. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Matt Sacks, |
