Possible reason for SJ being "left out" as compared to PA teams, see Flyers Cup (great opportunity to see how SJ and PA teams stack up against each other) results for SJ since 2004:
Overall Record: 7 wins 22 losses
Record at 'A' : 2 wins 12 losses Record at 'AA' : 4 wins 9 losses Record at 'AAA' : 1 win 1 loss
Records by teams: Rancocas: 0-1 Clearview: 0-2 Cherokee: 1-4 Washington Township: 3-4 (AA final in 2007) Eastern Regional: 1-2 Moorestown: 1-3 Williamstown: 1-3 Shawnee: 0-3
Tough to win a SJ argument based on recent history. Shawnee's road seems paved in 2008. Good luck!

You'll get no arguement that Shawnee is the best team in SJ this year, but you're not even close to one of the best teams to ever come out of SJ. Anyhow, you need to play some cross-over games with PA teams to see how you really stack up. You should play in a Xmas tourney in Aston or West Chester against PA teams. Fewer travel club players are opting to also play High School, especially serious AAA players. It looks like in a couple of years SJ HS will be basically a recreational league of players who can't make or afford a travel team.

Don’t sweat it Jigga, the Shawnee kid is a little mis-guided with his comments. The real leaders on that team are good players who let their game do their talking. You’re absolutely right about your comments regarding SJ teams’ approach to Flyers Cup. In the past I would say it had a lot to do with the fact that SJ teams for the most part don’t care about FC. For some reason it usually doesn’t have near the prestige it has in PA.
But this year, with the possible exception of Shawnee, the issue is more about talent level. SJFan is right; the SJ league has gotten significantly weaker in the past year or two. Not only that, the number of teams has dropped dramatically as well. If you look at their website, the number of total teams at all levels is down from 52 to 32 in the past five years, so it’s a quality and quantity issue. Not sure if these stats track with overall youth hockey in SJ, but this league is clearly heading in the wrong direction.

We go over this Flyers Cup issue every year.
For one thing, we are one league vs how many in PA? Has anyone taken each league in PA and checked to see how they each individually do in the Flyers Cup? We are 4 or 5 teams out of ?? 48 or something? Statistically we have a small chance of making it to the end.
Then, we end our season earlier than the PA leagues, have a double elimination playoff so that by the middle of February only a handful of teams are still playing, and, for some reason, all our high schools have their senior class trips in March!
The SJ teams do take the Flyers Cup seriously. We are very honored to be selected to play. But let's get real - the PA teams have a bit more incentive since the winners go on to States.
I do wish JPOP would change the title of this thread though....

Ok, so we all agree the league is horrible, besides one team. Not to sound like an a$s, but it is not held in high regard by the PA leagues, and is completely ridiculed by all New Jersey teams and leagues that play for the state championship.
It is what it is. Lets leave it at that.

We're weak this year. We have not always been weak. The reason we are not up for the NJ State championships is the same reason North Jersey gets everything it wants and South Jersey is the poor stepchild - the money and political power is in the north. No money will be provided to the SJ schools to sanction HS hockey, and only HS sanctioned hockey teams play for the state championship. You are lucky that the PA state championship is set up differently. So you're telling me that the PA teams are not being affected by top quaility players opting not to play high school. That probably doesn't affect the prep schools so much, but I did glance at the standings - ya'll started later and haven't played as many games but over 60% of the teams are under .500 so far. If the HS teams in PA are not weaker than usual, like the NJ teams, then why are we even discussing split seasons???

St Augustines 8 - Shawnee 1. Was this a scrimmage? I actually give Shawnee some credit, because I thought this would be a 10 goal win for SAP.

8-1 or 12-1, either way Shawnee looked tired against Cherokee last night. They had some jump in the first period but seemed to run out of steam as the game went on. Wonder if a game against SA made sense the night before a league game?
