He wants someone to call him with the score of the Methacton - Stoga game so he can announce it at Grundy. I assume you will be at Iceline? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Matt Sacks, |

in answer to gsquared --- Sutherland did get taken out by a similar hit early in the season...I don't remember the team. He was down for about 5 minutes before play could resume. The offending opponent escaped the area before any steps could be taken. However, on his return to the ice, Sutherland's PV teammates crushed him several times over the next few shifts. He was not skating with his previous verve afterwards. I can also say that he went nowhere near Sutherland for the rest of the game. If he had come within Sutherland's range, Sutherland would have taken care of business himself, I imagine. He's 6'1" and 190.

Boraske --- I was agreeing with Snipe's point that you take "the bad with the good"...this play wasn't a game-changer. Cheap shot or not, both kinds take place routinely in every game and this one just wasn't that big a deal.

From my understanding, the hit on Mattern was particularly brutal and uncalled for, otherwise we would never have had this conversation. So no, I do not think this was a play which takes place routinely every game. Maybe it didn't look like a big deal to you, but I imagine to Mattern's friends and teammates on the ice, it was a huge deal! Hence why Snipe asking them to display God like discipline and then criticizing them for not doing so is not only unfair, but counter hockey 101 as pond mentioned, "protect your goalie" is one of our most basic philosophies.

Boraske,
If they were protecting their goalie, they would have done it BEFORE the guy walloped Mattern. After the fact, you are just exacting revenge or retaliating if you will, and everyone knows that the kid who retaliates is the one that winds up in the box. In my old playing days, on my next shift I would be driving hard to the net every chance I got, and if a defender took me off my skates and I crashed into their goalie, so be it, but I wouldn't run their guy. |

How exactly do you go about protecting your goalie before he gets run? Yea you can throw hits and knock guys down in front of the net, but in this instance, the keeper was in the corner, exposed and unprotected. The kid charged him and took him out. I'm not trying to sound sarcastic but players can't stand around in the corner and intercept charging/cheapshotting forwards as easily as you make it sound.
I understand your point and agree, retaliation will usually net you worse results than doing nothing but the Henderson kids were left with no choice and acted as any team out there would (and should) have. |
