Who won breakaway player of the year
|

|
Got the final edition of the mag and this is what it has
Player of year: Nick Seravalli (HGP) Goalie: Dan Pyrne (La Salle) Defenseman: Brian Wanner (Stoga) Freshman: Zach Lazzaro (SV) Sportsmanship: Robert Sutherland (Perk Valley) Def. Forward: Andy Thomas (D-town East) Most Improved: Ben Grossman (Haven) I would like to congradulate everyone especially my teammate Zach for freshman of the year (which I have already done in school) and Rob Sutherland for the sportsmanship award (for the display of sportsmanship after our flyers cup game, which shows what this game is really about) |

What could be political about it? I never met or spoke to Wanner or his family?
If you want to think Player of the year is political....feel free, at least I know the family and you can use that in your argument, but you're wrong! But, D-man of the year being political is laughable. |

how could you even think about chosing Wanner for d-man of the year, he is a dirty player (66 pims and cheap shotted Haberle last Flyers Cup 06-07) and he wasnt even a good defenseman compared to others who may have been considered

What happened in '07 has nothing to do with anything. It was D-Man of the year for '08.
It was the toughest of the awards to choose. I didnt think there was anyone who stood out like in the past as true D-Man of the year Like a McGarry or Ferrick or Goers or Wochtl. I could have given it to any one of 10 defenseman. There were 10 D-men that I thought It could have gone to. I could have put the 8 d-men from the All-Breakaway team and pulled one out of a hat, but I decided to pick somebody instead. Feel free to dis-agree, like I said, it was the toughest to choose and if you said that anyone of the other 9 guys that I was thinking of deserved it over him....I won't put up an arguement.....I wasnt going to make it a 10 way tie.....I had to make a choice. But for anyone to say it was political, I'll laugh in their face. I wouldnt know Wanner if he was standing in line next to me. |

Not that you ever have to justify picks, Matt, but out of curiosity's sake, what was it that gave Wanner the edge then?
Congrats to everybody on the list. |

At first I didn't think much of the Wanner pick either. I agree with Matt, there was not one defenseman that stood out above the rest. I am guessing Wanner's play in the Flyers Cup most noteable the FC final is what boosted him to be D-man of the year. He made 3 key 1 on 1 stops on AJ Moyer in overtime alone. He was the most solid defencemen on a Flyers cup winning team. So after thinking about it Wanner makes as much sense as Lamont or Varley who would be my next 2 picks for D-man of the year.
To say that the POY pick was political is like Matt siad, laughable! I thought any of the kids on the 1st team (Sarevelli, Cottle, Berkle) deserved player of the year. It was very obvious how much Nick ment to his team, and you could always pick him out on the ice. He led an average team into a flyers cup final and they played a hell of a game against La Salle. I think his POY is well deserved, and can't honestly see how someone would question it. Out of pure Curiosity anyone who does disagree with the picks, who would have you guys picked (Borakse, Mendell, Pez, ect ect ect) |

Turd,
Anyone of the eight d-men on the all-breakaway team, throw in Pascal from LaSalle, Zeigler or DeLuca from PV, Hayden from Springfield. The field for D-men had a lot of Parity this year. Also, I've met Mandell, he's a nice kid....he just didnt choose hs words very wisely when he posted. Boraske, Good question.....I don't like to use one game or even the Flyers cup to make these picks, I try to base it on the whole season, but when I'm at a stand still like I was with D-man of the year, I need something to "break the tie". Wanner was the best player on the ice for 'Stoga in the finals...that alone wont get him the pick, but he was allready in my top four. First I selected the first team all-breakaway....then it's only logical to have one of two first team defenders as the D-man of the year, so in the end, after putting Wanner and Lamont on the first team, it came down to those two for the pick. I hope that makes sense.....again, I'm not offended if people disagree with any of the picks, especially D-Man this year.....but dont think for one second that ANY of the picks were "political" |

I think the Seravelli pick is a weak one. I thought his Junior year was actually stronger than his senior season. Perhaps there's a LBCSHL bias there. If you throw his stats against any of the top La Salle forwards they are very comparable, and La Salle played MUCH tougher competition. Perhaps Tyson, Schmidt, and Berkle were hurt by the strength of their team.
And, if as mentioned in earlier posts, the FC final was a "decider", I thought Seravelli was the 4th best player on the ice for HGP behind his cousin, their goalie, and Hoffman that afternoon; settling for weak wrist shots from the blue line instead of rushing the puck at La Salle's D Men. I'll conceede he didn't have a great final against LaSalle, but the award isnt for player of the game, it was for player of the year. How many times did you see him this year other than that game? Did you see the semi-final game against Malvern?
I don't quite understand the Lower Bucks bias comment? He is the first ever player of the Year given to a LB player. I dont recall a D-Man of the year or Freshman of the year coming from the LB, and he last goalie of the Year from the LB was John Zdunkewicz from Pennsbury in 2001. |

If you took away any one of Tyson, Berkle or Schmidt, Lasalle would have still been just as strong, and still would have won states. If you take Nick away from HGP last season, I think they probably lose to Ohara, or Malvern at best, and never make it to the finals. That would be the true definiteion of MVP. The player that is most valuable to their team. Sure theres probably 4 Lasalle players that are deserving, but no player meant more to their team then Seravalli did.
