I must say that in all my years involved in States (mostly on the outside looking in) This year was run much better than those of the past, Although the teams still didnt get to take the trophy home Frowner

The banquet dinner went well.
Their were a few minor details with paper work....which were all worked out.
The hospitality was great.
There was only one "minor" distraction to the East before the games as 'Stoga was forced to remove an "A" from one of their players as USA hockey rules state that a team may have one captain and two assistants. 'Stoga had three.

The registrar from the West (Bartowski) did a great job and worked well with Ken Haas to find solutions for the few paperwork errors that occured.

Thanks to Ken Haas, Mr Bartowski and Ed Samm for putting differences aside and finally letting this day be what it should be....a day for the kids to play hockey!

I had a pleasant time out there this weekend. I broke bread and spent time at the hotel with some of the Pine Richland parents and it was a pleasure talking hockey with them.

The hotel, the rink and the PIHL did a first class job all the way and I thank them for that.

I thought the officiating in the first two games was very good.....BUT, not so great in the AAA game. (Two out of three ain't bad)

Where were the fans for the East? None of the games were very well attended.

Congrats to WC East, Latrobe and La Salle for capping of this season with a state championship....you all earned it!

Matt,

You are now a Villan ? Roll Eyes
Thanks for Dinner !

LaSalle proved something yesterday which will change the philosophy of teams who want to win the State Championship. The Explorers beat or tied 7 (DEfending or Current) State Champions this season by playing an expanded schedule with [Delbarton NJ, Fairfield Prep Conn, St Mary's NY, St Joes (Buffalo) NY, North Allegheny PA, Pine Richland PA, St Edwards OHIO]. Pine RIchland chose to play one tournament outside of the PIHL.

Latrobe, although they were outshot, deserved to be champions, Loyacona was terrific, they scored some big goals at big times, played very good defense blovking shots and clearing rebounds and went 6-0 against the top 3 teams in Western Pa and Sotga.

West Chester East was the better team. Credit to coach Drew Cox for quick shifts early on and using his depth and even though they could not score on several power play chances early in the game, just kept working and overcome a pretty good goalteding performance by Zach Taylor and shut down Colin South. WC East ran the table in the Inter-County Playoffs and defeated the defeding champs WC Henderson and was a true champion yesterday.

Jeffrey,

Great choice on the Haven. Not quite the dive you described, but the wings were great as promised. Thanks Matt.

I thougt the officiating in the A and AA games was very good and very fair. AAA not so much, but the questionable calls came after LaSalle had the game in hand.

Great day of hockey although I thought the AAA game wouild be closer. LaSalle just manhandled PR and made the plays when they needed them.

As I expected the War Memorial was a great place for the championships to be held. Shame we don't have a similar venue (size and amenity-wise) here in the East. Although, I'm not sure the people in the West are big fans of the WM.

I was disappointed about the trophy situation. I expected the West to not allow the teams to keep the trophies, but after about a minute of celebration on the ice, they were right there asking for them. We know all the history beihind not keeping the trophy, but why not let the team celebrate with it until the leave their locker room. Instead of hawking them on the ice, just post a guy at the locker room to make sure the trophy stays.

WC East had a great crowd (a little rude during introductions) but a good enthusiastic group. Conestoga had a much smaller crowd and LaSalle had the smallest of th East groups. Latrobe had a huge crowd -- loud and proud. Pine Richland also had a small crowd. We figured about 1000 people for the A game, 1200 - 1500 for the AA and maybe 500 - 600 for the AAA.

speaking on behalf of W.C East our fan turnout was pretty much the amount we expected. A fan buss was planned for the game but it ended up getting canceld. Its hard to find kids that want to wake up at 6 am to drive 4 hours to a game at 11 am then drive 4 hours back. Mostly all of our fans there had stade up at Penn State Friday night and drove to Johnstown in the morning for the game.

I'm sure someone has explained this and I've just missed it, but...why is it again that we don't get to bring the State Championship Trophy home when we win the State Championship? There must be some rational explanation that I've missed.

There is an explanation, but it isn't rational.

They are worried about the damage that is caused when teams take the trophies with them. So you get to touch it, take a picture with it, but it never leaves the ice with you.

Amazing that the Stanley Cup, the most treasured trophy in all of sports, is allowed to go on a tour with each player that has won it, yet this trophy isnt even allowed to be displayed at the school of the winning team. It just goes back in a box and put in storage and only comes out for air once a year.

Matt -- Let me re-phrase what you just said, in blunter terms...This is utterly ridiculous! How can this be made to stop, in your opinion? My team didn't win the thing, but one of OURS did and the trophy should be here! It seems pretty clear.

For East - If it was on the ice for 5 minutes - I would be surprised. Is it one cup per level or one cup for all 3 levels? It seemed like they wanted their eyes on it at all times. Sorta kinda weird...At least the players/coaching staff got to touch it.

Does anyone know how often a school team at A, AA, or AAA has won all 3 titles in the same year? Is that common? (Their league title, Flyers or Penguins Cup and State).

Last year at Aston when Henderson won, Richie Kearns was attempting to get the trophy for them. I interveened on Hendersons/Richie's behalf and tried to help get the thing resolved. I was told by someone from the East (not Richie) "To mind my own business"

This year I was standing next to Kenny Haas when he offered a $1000.00 deposit for each trophy (should the East win any of them) That went nowhere as well.

This issue should be addressed NOW by the East. It seems that every year we (The East) wait until the day before states to make an issue of this and every year the results are the same.

I think there needs to be something in writing that allows the winner of the Trophy to have their trophy for the calander year, or we have to protest by not going...how else do we get the point across that this won't fly anymore?

Another solution is that the East purchases replica trophies and allows the teams to take them for the Calander year.

BTW, the West teams don't get the trophy if they win it either.

There is no league title in Pittsburgh. They all play in one league and the Penguins Cup is their playoff.

There is a different trophy for each State Champ. (All three are tucked away in a closet right now)

Sweeps are not uncommon.

The East swept in 2004, Malvern, Carroll and Radnor.

Before that the West swept for FOUR straight years. 2000, '01, '02, '03

Why not make the replica's and send half the bill over to the west. I'm sure teams out there would like it displayed at there schools too.

I agree, but who pays "thier half" They are run by the PIHL so I doubt the PIHL would spring for half the bill when they allready have trophies (Locked away in closets)
