Raha just listed off a whole bunch of players that didn't leave and made D1 teams. You can also include Frank McGlocklin from bonner, and I heard a rumor of John Brennan from radnor at North Eastern. Truth is if you have the talent, the scouts and coaches will find you.

Every single one of those players minus Gunderson played Jr's between high school and college. Frankie made the team but never saw much time. Brennan did play at Northeastern for 2 years but also didn't see much time. |

My comment was just saying that they didn't need to leave the area at 16 or 17 to make it there.

The cream always rises to the top.
Ive seen kids who leave the area in 7th or 8th grade, whos parents think they have next prodigy on their hands. Most of the time things dont work out the way they thought. Ive also seen kids who played here as long as they wanted, and have gone much farther then many kids who were always off somewhere drinking the koolaid. Look at Brian Oneill, he played tier 2 most of his life, now hes having a great year in the USHL, and has a D-1 offer. Believe me, if your that good, you will be found, and will end up where your supposed to be in the end. |

I don't disagree with RaHa's list or that there are PAST players who were dominant enough and with their other attributes were able to make D1 programs. But, the facts indicate that in the last 5-10 years things have changed dramatically. After high school graduation is late to start in the USHL or in any of the Canadian "A" leagues (I'm not refering to Major Junior) or even the so-called "Junior A" leagues in the US (none of which are recognised as "A" by USA Hockey). I stick by my view that consistently dominant and game-changing players have become rare in high school hockey because of college programs' (and pro, for that matter) higher premium on Junior experience than on high school play.

I disagree that the cream always rises to the top. It's the job of the player/coaches to put them in a position to get noticed. John Doe can be the high school player but he doesn't play for a club team chances are he won't get noticed by scouts so most likley his hockey creear will end when he gradues. Kids don't just leave the area to get noticed by top scouts, there is also the reason to develop thier talent, by playing for expeirenced coaches, and playing with players that are on their same level. The job of juniors/prep school is to take taht talent and develop skill and hopefully that leads to the players next level sucuess. Sometimes leaving the area before 16 is a good thing for a plyer but other times a kid can leave after he graduads high school and still be sucuessful at the next level (ex. Brian O'neil, John Williams) Alot of it has to do with the drive of the player as well. Again John Doe can be the best high school player in the area, and goes to the USHL where he is not the top player on his team, and he can't just skate though everyone in the league. Does he work hard to take his talent and develop skill or does he just quit because its alot of hard work.
The point i was making is that besdies Gunderson everyone of those players needed to play at a higher level of hockey to be noticed by thier respective D1 schools. |

Ok my original point was there is not really any players in today league today that look like they will be able to play DI (Outside of maybe 3-4 depending on development and growth) and that was a list of kids past who dominated and everyone knew they would go to play DI.
You are right that if you are a good young player you should head to a real junior team in the NAHL or USHL asap. However on the other hand if you are real good and you want to play and you can sell yourself you will get a chance. Just like Gunderson, he was a walk on at Vermont and ended up being 2nd line before he left. Actually you are wrong about USA hockey not reconizing any of the new leagues as Junior A. Hers the list. Junior A Tier I United States Hockey League Junior A Tier II North American Hockey League Junior A Tier III Central States Hockey League Minnesota Junior Hockey League Northern Pacific Junior Hockey League Western States Hockey League Atlantic Junior Hockey League Eastern Junior Hockey League I will give you that the Tier III teams cant even hold a candle to the tier I and Tier II. By candle I mean most NAHL or USHL teams would beat these other team in the 10-0 range. However I dont think there the worst idea to do for a year or so after graduating high school to get a shot at playing DI or good DIII. As long as they dont get in the way of your education who cares, I played for a very good educational school in college and we had a lot of players who played a couple years in juniors after high school. We also got the canadian guys who played juniors till they where 21 and never got the ride they wanted to a school haha. I graduated with two players who where 26, that was a little rediculous. |

Yea, I didnt mean it in the most literal sense of the term. You can go very far, by playing in this area at high levels. you dont have to move to Detroit or Toronto or New England at 14 or 15 to do this. Yea a kid that is ripping up in-house isnt going to be seen by OHL scouts, but that kid will probably be seen by a good bantam AA team, then a good midget AAA team, then a good junior scout. As a side note, my opinion on leaving early; unless you are one of the 2 or 3 best players in the district in your age group, and have OHL or USHL teams knocking down your door, I dont see the point in leaving the area for HOCKEY reasons prior to 17 years old or the conclusion of your junior year of high school. |

I agree, allthough I think theres more than 2-3 players that could go from the district. Probaly in the 7-10 range. The only way if your not one of these top playesr you should leave for "hockey reasons" is if your going to a real Prep school. Than your getting a great education and a better shot at a good college and playing good hockey. |
