I always seemed to agree with the old standard that the ICSHL held the best A teams but had weaker AA teams (generally) while the Suburban league had the power in AA and had a weaker A. I am leaving out the Lower-Bucks and the Eastern league for now since they don’t have the same number of teams as the suburban and inter-county.

So for the first time since I can remember it looks as if the Suburban league will win a flyers cup (3 teams in the AA semi finals). I started watching HS hockey in 2002, and since than I cannot remember a suburban league team winning at any level even though they have had some good teams.

So first I totaled up the number of flyers cup’s each league has won just to see when the last time the suburban league has won a flyers cup. It was in 1994 Germantown Academy won it’s 2nd AAA title in a row. Another interesting fact I learned was that the suburban league has only won 2 AA flyers cups and they were in 1991 and 1992 (GA again and Council Rock) So this just made me wonder how come everyone including myself always figures the suburban league has stronger AA teams, yes they have more AA teams, and yes a bunch always seem to be good but they just don’t seem to win flyers cups. Generally you would judge past teams by winning, I doubt many people will remember how good 2007 La Salle or 2005 Germantown Academy was in a few years since their names are not on the Flyers Cup, so I am curious as to how people (again including myself) always say that the Suburban league is better at AA.

I don’t want this post to come off as me ripping the Suburban league at all, I was just curious as to the last time they won a Flyers cup. I am sure a Suburban team will win one at AA and AAA this year and I am sure someone will give me an angry post about how the past doesn’t matter and tell me to bite my tongue since their team won one this year, so you can save that.

The totals for anyone who is curious as far as flyers cups are

I used the leagues the teams were in when they won the Flyers cup like in 2001 Springfield was a member of the Eastern league, as was Malvern when they won in the early 90’s.

You cant compare the AA teams of the 90's to the AA teams of today.

Back then the leagues just sent who they wanted to the AA and A Flyers Cups, there was no distinguishing a AAA team from an A team.

The SHSHL sent their best team at the end of the season to the AAA Flyers Cup, the second best team to the AA tourney and their third best team to the A tourney. Things have changed since then.

The SHSHL sent three teams to the AA semi's in 2005 and Haverford High ended up winning it all.

I'll back Matt on this one - there was no reason for HGP to be playing AA in 2003 when we won the Flyers Cup. We had made the AAA level the year before in the final year of determining Flyers Cup based upon league finish, and we lost to LaSalle 6-3. Thus we were allowed to stay at AA for 2003, and I'll go so far as to say we could have beaten anyone at AAA (we tied LaSalle 5-5 that year with our backup goaltender), so even just five years ago, things were very different. Henderson was AA back then too, and they would have rolled through the entire bracket had they not had to come to Grundy for a championship game against what should have been a AAA team.

Yea, anything pre 2005, really doesnt hold weight in arguments sake. The alignment has totally changed for the better.

03 Holy Ghost Prep Vs. 03 Mavlern would have been a good match-up but Malvern would have still come out on top. Gunderson and Worthington were a great pair but they would have had to battle Curren-Campanele and still beat Wocthl, Byrne, Benner and Will Averona before even getting a shot on Cetola. Our annual scrimmage with them always seemed to end in a tie.

So anything won before 2005 means nothing just because of the alignment? The alignment effected everyone like civi said about HGP played AA, its not as if suburban league teams were playing by different rules.

Also on the topic of classes, i know many people know this but for those that don't GA, and Malvern would both play 'A' in Pittsbugh. I think we need to get a uniform allingment system.

It all counts....you just can't compare the era's. AA wasnt really AA before '05, it was whoever each league chose to send to the tournament, regardless of school size or open enrollment advantages.

Jigga

GA can actually play A here also

Comparing the 3 levels prior to 2005 would be difficult since any given year teams would be places into different brackets. From 2005 on there is more consistency with fewer teams being moved around. I know that Top Cat disagrees with me on how good the SHSHL is but I think the SHSHL has the strongest group of AA teams but for overall quality (all three levels combined) I think Inter County is clearly better. There is no way SHSHL A teams could ompete with the SHSHL AA teams the way they do in Inter County

I would agree Suburban league has more good AA teams, but I wouldn't say top AA schools are any better than the top AA teams in the Eastern (Haverford High, Even Ridley who was better than their record and played well VS C.B. South) or Inter-County (Boyertown, Conestoga, Methacton, D'town east)

I sort of agree. I was speaking to the group as a whole. They have also had some of the worst AA teams in history.

Oh and Ridley played CB East not CB South.
