In the PITTSBURGH EXPERIENCE PART 2 topic line, pez35 had what I think is a terrific solution to the trophy problem. We ("the East") buy a new set of trophies (approx. cost $3000) and, starting next season, the winner of each of the three State Championships, whether from the East or the West, takes their trophy for the year, until the next State Tournament. This will make the existing trophies superfluous and they can just stay in their storage closet or wherever.

My questions are two:

1. Can we in the East gain a consensus around this idea (the cost might be $50/school, one time)? And,

2. If so, who do we need to get together and how can we actually get this done? Do we even need to involve the West
other than informing them?

The Flyers Cup paid Western Pa for the trophies. The check was not made out to the PIHL, but for some reason was made out to the PIHL Commissioner [I saw the checkbook]

Somebody from the FLyers Cup needs to have the balls to stand up to these people and tell them that the Pennsylvania High School Hockey State Championships owns the trophies and not the PIHL! Why is that so hard.?

Secondly, the names of EVERY state champion since 1975 is on those trophies and someone will have to get that information, which the I compiled and the PIHL would not return to me. The best thing that can happen is that the Flyers Cup refuses to take part in any post State Championship ceremonies until the winning teams are allowed to hold the trophy for ONE year and return it to the respective Flyers Cup or Penguins Cup committee.

The PIHL did not have the 2007 names engraved on the trophies until a week or two before the State Finals........they should be engraved immediately following the State finals.

Before this topic disappears from the collective consciousness and another year passes, can we get back into this trophy discussion?
What does anyone think of pez's idea about new State Championship Trophies?
Can we get a consensus here in the east?
If so, who do we need to get involved to get something done?

I think Jeff brought up the point that we won't have access to all the previous winners whose names have been engraved on the trophy.

Unless this trophy wont need to have that.

Matt --- You are probably the best person to give advice on this. The problem of accurately getting the names of all past winners for each trophy has been solved, by the way. So...what would your answers or opinions on the two questions (above) be?

My oppinion on #1 is: Yes it could get done

#2: No, we dont need to inform the West, but if we give the West the trophy when they win it, and it comes back damaged or doesnt come back at all, we probably wouldn't have the support of the Western brass when we ask them for the assistance on the matter.

The Flyers Cup committee are the ones to address. I Dont want to give out phone numbers and address's over the internet to people that I dont know., But if you want to write a letter to the Flyers Cup committee, you can send it to me and I will make sure it gets into the right hands, or, mail it to Hatfield Ice Arena C/O Kenny Haas, I'm sure they will get it to him.

Matt ---
One more question: Can you think of a better way to solve this ridiculous dilemma?
And, parenthetically, ANY team that doesn't return the trophy a week before the FC and PC tournaments begin could be barred from play, perhaps. Or, assuming there's a fee payable in order to participate in the FC and PC play, replacement cost could be added to that team's fee as an inducement to return the trophy before play begins. Or something. The team that wins the State Championship Trophy can take it for the year if they leave a $1000 deposit!! If they don't want to take the trophy, fine.

I will try this a second time.

I think all the leagues in the East should pay for and purchase a second set of trophies, with money also from the west since the east also helped pay for those trophies. We should then approach the Flyers about two trophy cases at the Wachovia Center. Put the trophies on display at the Wachovia Center (they are never given to the winning team to take with them, they will get distroyed). A replica smaller trophy should be given out to the winning team, for them to keep, and to be put in their school trophy case. How cool would it be to see your kids name, friends name, relatives name, or your name on display at the Wachovia Center. Think that would help promote high school hockey? We should do this whether the west agrees to help with the cost or not. The trophy cases should be visible from all sides so that the names of all the teams on the trophies can be seen.
There should be two trophy cases one for the Flyers Cup Trophies and one for the State Championship Trophies. I think all the league presidents can pull this off.

Nick ---
Why would the West cooperate? As far as they're concerned, this dumb system in place now is fine?
Second, who wants a small replica trophy when you've won the real thing? I think the danger of the real trophy not surviving a year in a case under the care of the State Champion is very slight. Plus, the team in possession can be held accountable.
Third, put up a plaque at the Wachovia Center, updated annually. Or hang giant banners, updated annually. If I'm not mistaken, the trophies only have the school name, not each player and coach.
Personally, I think it would mean a lot more to everyone who wins a Championship and everyone who is involved with them to have the real trophy at the school for the year. But my main interest is in getting a consensus behind SOME plan which gets the trophy into the hands of each State Champion for more than the usual minute and a half after the game. I would love to get more feedback on this and see if there can be a consensus. Then something can be done NOW, rather than talk about this again 12 months from now.

I don't think that the west will cooperate, that is why I said that we should do it whether they agree to contribute or not. (I was only trying to get some of our money back.)

As far as the trophies getting damaged, they will, have you seen the Flyers Cup trophies? You have to remember most of the schools don't reconize hockey, and the Flyers Cup trophies end up in somebody's basement. Or tucked away in a school office somewhere, because it is too big to put in a trophy case for one year.

I think giving the winning school a trophy to keep would have a better chance on making it into the school trophy case. Plus in the past, it was not always easy to find out who on the winning team had the trophies when we needed them back. I know because we have had to try and find them in the past. (The teams were not sure who had the trophy, the player graduated, or even moved)

The players names along with the school name are put on the Flyers Cup trophies. I don't know what is put on the state trophies, I have never seen them up close. But that does not mean we can't put the players names on our state trophies. They are ours, we can do what we want.

Even the trophies that the west have now, I do not believe the kids see them except when they win, then they must give them back to the trophy cop, and he puts them back in a black box till the next year.

The league presidents and Rob with the Flyers can pull this off.

Nick ---
Well, while I prefer the pez35 proposal, I'll be happy with anything that puts the trophy in the hands of the team that wins it. I'm hoping that we can get more comment here. If there is no consensus here then I'll submit all of the various proposals to the FC Committee, as Matt recommended, and let them take it from there. I just want to stop this silliness of the West acting like they own the trophies and keeping them stashed in darkness all year.

I think Eastern Pa should refuse to play in the State Finals until the trophies are kept with the winning team for one year and it should be written into the rules as such. This is Eastern Pa's year to host in 09. Have Haas call a meeting of the State Final COmmittee and put it to a vote. West gets two votes and East gets two votes and then the host is the Chair and gets to break the tie. Have some balls....I will chair the 2009 State Finals and cast the vote for this for Philly !
