I have just heard a very troubling rumor that some of the parents of star players at Henderson are attempting to oust Art Marcellus as coach. I will chime in on this more later, but what do other people think. I also know that the Shanahan varsity job was turned down by an internal candidate due to parents and player indifference as well. Both bits of info are from reliable sources.
There were issues between the Henderson players & coach all season. The Board was involved many times. Hopefully the best applicant for the job will get the coaching position next season.
There are issues between players and coaches on every team....every year. Bottom line is he coached that team to a State championship....if that doesnt satisfy the people in the organization....what will?

It is a problem today that sometimes we pursue short term objectives that fit our needs, and we don't look at the long term goals that benefit the entire group beyond our time. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Maybe someone should ask the returning Varsity players if they want to play for the Henderson Coach.

I would ask them, but they are in a bad situation if they answer on a public forum and they end up playing for him next season after publicly critisizing...........

I'm under the impression that Art wasn't the first choice of coach going into the season, but that the one that the Henderson board wanted was prevented from coaching HS hockey because of some type of suspension or violation with coaching credentials. In any case, I'd really like to know what the issues were for desiring him to be ousted. If they were that significant, why was he not fired mid-season. Say what you want, but if the issue is that the players didn't like the coach, it's probably more to do with the coach holding players accountable for their actions and them not liking it, than it is for unfair or "star" treatment. Whatever the case may be, I like to believe in the idea of what goes around comes around, and whichever party is in the wrong will eventually get what's coming to them.
I remember when a similar situation took place at Conwell Egan in 2000. They had just won the Sate Championship and they too fired the coach Rich Slack. How’d that turn out for CEC?

i think cec's downfall had more to do with the board members only caring about the present, not the future, with members doing whast best for their kids, not teh program as a whole. potential players lost interest. also the school has had a significant decrease in enrollment also in the last 10 years.
Just some names I'm hearing being bandied about for the Henderson job: Bill Hammond, Rich Hribal, Dave Dorman. In my opinion, I don't know why they would drop Art for any of these guys. Not that they're bad (not at all), but are they THAT much better than Art? Also, the D'town West job was given to one of Nick Pillotti's assistants from last year. I'm not sure of his name, but it's not Joe or Mike, and the ICSHL website is no longer showing last season's Varsity south rosters, so I can't provide the name at this moment.
I understand that Art has been retained as the Head Coach at Henderson again. I believe that this is going to be good for the Henderson Club as it will allow for some longer term consistency in the Club. Congratulations to Art! After all he has had 3 very good seasons while winning 2 ICSHL JVA championships, the Ice Works JVA Tournament, The A Flyers Cup, and The State A Championship. There's still a lot of work to do...Good Luck!

Good to hear that! I still think it's a shame though that the process even took place. Also, I was at IceLine tonight and I think I saw Rustin having tryouts. They look good. They will challenge Henderson this year in the new ICSHL division I feel. After all, they'll be a year older AND lost no seniors to graduation. Goaltending will be the only area I can see that may be soft. Anyone else with reports on HS spring teams or tryouts?
Also think Rustin will be a strong team in the ICSHL next season.....in addition would expect Henderson and Kennett to be right there also. Despite their losses to graduation (Kennett-McGarry, Hodges etc and Henderson-Beren,Smith, Kelly etc.) both teams still return some very outstanding players and have two of the best goalies in the area returning in Tinkoff and Mattern.
I believe henderson has the ability to go all the way again this year. With players like cottle, latta, blaker, and mattern you know they have some studs. Key role players this year will be kinkead, romondo, speroff, wallace. They will need some more players to step up but i can see the Warriors making a run. As for Rustin, until Knodel decides to toughing up and accually lay somebody out they got a pretty average team. The only reason why Knodel is even a varsity player is his size, and even with that i think somebody like 5 feet tall could lay him out. Hopefully he steps up to his size
