When the person has no affiliation with the school other than the fact that he coaches the hockey team and the person he is talking to is a public school all-star.....cmon, your smarter than that!

You probaly should fire your kid not his mom. If he was good enough you would have heard about one.

To dumpandchase --- You apparently weren't aware that raha127 is our resident expert on all things hockey. He makes comments like that which he just made to you routinely when someone has the crust to take an opinion which is different than his own.

Matt,
You were there and saw his intent and body language and now include that the kid was an all-star. I believe you -- we was probably recruiting. My original comments were based solely on your quote - "I'd love to have you here at -----, have your parents call me if you're interested" - is fairly innocuous.

How does Malvern's incoming class look? Did they get any good Jr Flyers/tier 1 players?

It makes sense they havent been recruiting as much now as in the past. Theres a ton of good players in their area they dont go there, that they probably would have gotten in the past.

Milana, Latta, Cottle, Lamont, Knodel, etc would all probably be the type of players they would have brought in before. Its surprising that none of those kids ended up going to Malvern. I do remember that they did try to get Latta to transfer in, but it never happened.

I'm not sure EXACTLY what the rule is regarding recruiting by parochial (day) schools and prep (boarding) schools. But some famous lawyer once said something to the effect that "If this is against the law, then the law's an ass!".
In my view, if there is a rule which is fundementally uninforcable, perhaps the rule itself should be re-visited.
Equally difficult is the question of financial incentives, scholarships, etc. Very difficult to police without intruding in a somewhat public way into families' personal finances in what are, in fact, private transactions. I have a tougher time coming up with a precise answer to this one.
For me, they are two questions with separate answers. Recruiting by open enrollment schools can't be stopped, so don't try. Financial enticements have perhaps been successfully dealt with in other sports at these schools. If so, follow that model. If not, maybe this is more appropriate a topic for each school to reconcile with its own internal constituents...faculty, trustees, administration, mission statement, etc.

HHfan,

Just for the record, there is a difference between a parochial school and a prep school, and you did not distinguish it correctly.

All day schools arent parochial. LaSalle, SJP, Malvern, Ghost, etc. while being day schools, arent parochial schools. They are prep schools, regardless of boarding.

Parochial schools are schools that are run by the Archdiocese: Ryan, Roman, Judge, Ohara, Bonner, Shanahan, Wood, CEC, Pius X, Little Flower etc.

Jimmy --
I understand the distinction. I think, though, that separation into the day/boarding catagories makes it most easy to review their practices. Day schools operate generally in a certain way, while boarding schools operate in a different world, particularly as it relates to costs, financial aid, etc.

As parents we have no idea. As stated in other threads since Graves left major recruiting appears over. Only the Admissions and Athletic Depts knows who is coming.

So there will be some parity now?

Nope. LaSalle is still recruiting heavily.

I hope not, that would not be good for AAA high school hockey. Compared to NJ Gordon, the league needs better teams. This year Delbarton, CBA and St Augustines were all in the same ballpark as Lasalle. Eustace, Bergen Catholic, Don Bosco, and Seton Hall were probably a little stronger then Malvern and HGP. The goal for the next 5 years would be to have a similar talent level to NJ Gordon.
