Do the preps and private schools (LaSalle, St. Joes Prep, HGP, etc) "Help" players get into their schools? Are players recognized/scouted or can a recommendation come from a curent student/parent, that would cause the school to offer a student a lower tuition, academic help or a straight out scholarship?

LaSalle does not offer sports scholarships, Academic only, and those are for $4,000 or $2,000 and are based on the entrance exam.

officially No. In reality yes. I don't just mean La Salle, all of the private schools do for all sports. It happens more so with football, basketball and lacrosse more so than hockey, but it does happen in hockey.

Holy Ghost does not offer athletic scholarships for any sport.

In most cases the private schools know who the kids are that are interested in their school, especially if the player is very talented.

Yeh theres no "Sports scholarships" but somehow dumb kids use to go to get "academic" scholarships to go to Malvern for free that played hockey haha.

Its kinda like at my college, when there wasnt enough football scholarships to go around for some reason the track team would get about 10 kids on it that where on full scholarships that didnt show up to meets but for some reason they played on the football team. Haha

If your that good they will find you a way on the team and in the school.

and don't forget the "fathers club" sometimes its
got another name but its essentially a booster organization. the coaches go to the board tell them they need a kid for(pick the sport)the boosters pick up the tab. so technically the "school doesn't give athletic scholarships". sounds noble and is of course complete fiction.

I know at LaSalle, HGP and St. Joe's there are no sports scholarships. For people who think that these schools find money to give athletes are out of their mind. First at LaSalle, Football and Lacrosse come before hockey. At HGP its soccer and basketball and Prep is football and lacrosse. To get a scholarship I know you need to get a 99 on the entrance exam at any of these schools to even be considered. There are kids out there who do not play sports who happen to be very smart individuals where the bulk of the scholarships go. Other then that the only way to get money is through financial aid which they offer to kids who can not afford school and who can prove it.

HockeyDad asked 2 questions: Are kids recruited and are they then "helped" financially. Yes, they are recruited, not all of them and not necessarily overtly. Sometimes the parent has to make the first move, sometimes the coach will know a kid from youth hockey and will inkle something to a parent to GET the parent to make the first move. But, yes, a lot of the kids are recruited in one way or another.
And, having been spending a bunch of money for years on hockey already, the lion's share of parents aren't going to balk at a few thousand more during high school if they think that the parochial school will present their kid with greater opportunity for future success in hockey or something else. The parochial school costs are not insignificant, but at least your kid is at home. Prep school cost are 4-5 times what parochial school costs are and everyone has to be ready for the kid to move away. That's a much tougher thing.

civi17 is absolutely correct regarding academic eligability being maintained. Some faculty will give the student/athlete every imaginable break, but in the final analysis great athletic performance won't save a kid who won't do the academics.

After hearing for a few years that "we don't recruit", a certain private school coach said to a sophomore public school player "I'd love to have you here at -----, have your parents call me if you're interested"

I heard it with my own two ears as I was about five feet away from the coach and the player when it was said. This was about four years ago. I'd rather not mention the club or the people involved, but I heard it myself. To me, that was blatant recruiting from someone that I've heard say numerously "we don't recruit".

Right. Or the prep or parochial school coach who slides up to a parent at a Bantam practice and says "That your kid? (with a head-tilt towards the ice) What grade's he in?" Gets the answer, after a second or two, he nods thoughtfully and walks away...leaving it to the parent to pick up the ball. Smooth...but recruiting, nonetheless.

Yeh but as Hfan stated, the teachers will give you every break. Basically if you show up and do at least half of your work youl get through.

here is the low down on how these kids get into the 'prep' 'private' schools. first off, the catholic schools in the area are very restricted on allocating any money to any of the athletes but they do have hidden scholarships that are out there. as for the 'prep' schools there is money. they will never classify it as an athletic scholarship to anyone. they can not do that. look at most of the prep schools. they build on diversity and that is how they bring these kids in. the big thing with them is completing all the financial aid forms that are about 8 pages. the schools have the money to give these families. look you can make $80,000 a year and they can still free ride you to the school. (one of the best questions on the form is do you pay to belong to a club? well, if you play club hockey...that is a write off. and believe me you keep track of all the travel and gas and it adds up) if they want you, they will work a way to get you in there. yes all the prep schools recruit. don't let them say they don't. i know first hand. been on both sides of the fence here so i do know! these schools push for their alumni to contribute a boat load of money. Dupont (the one sitting in jail) has and still donates at least 1 million dollars anonymously to 2 local prep schools and even to villanova even though they took his name off the gym. the average cost for the local prep schools range from $12,000 to $23,000.

Hey thanks for the candor. I just saw some interesting things going on at one of the schools this year when it came to a few of the sports, hockey being one of them. It also looks like it helps if you play on certain club teams.
