Rule 639.

And wow...there certainly are some tough guys in Chester County. These kids think they're playing football on ice.

The major trip is normally called during a "slew-foot"(sp?) situation which is what that was. (from what I hear)

Ok, I am completely confused as to what everyone is talking about with a 5 min tripping penalty...there was no 5 min. tripping penalty in the Unionville/Rustin game?????

your confusion is understandable given the title of this thread. The 5 minute "trip" was in the McDevitt/Abington game on 11/21 and is referred to in one of the posts above here.

We were apparently doing "my penalty list is bigger than yours..."

This message board format can be Short Attention Span Theater when it comes to staying on topic...

Did a unionville parent really jump on the ice? what is the story behind that?

From the new sensation that's sweeping the hockey nation known as "opening up the rule book"...

"What are examples where a major penalty for tripping should be assessed?

Leg extension is the most common infraction where a major penalty should be assessed. This action has the potential to seriously injure the opponent, and to some extent the offending player as well.

Leg extension in front of the fouled player is our "let checking" rule that has been included in the tripping rule for years.

Leg extension from behind, particularly if combined with a push to the chest area of the fouled player, is "slew footing" and is extremely dangerous and must be penalized accordingly."

Playing rules casebook, page 325, situation 3 in reference to rule 639.

Carl is right, this is short attention span theater, but I figure rule references are far more exciting than people gossiping about fans or bashing the Iceline staff

Actually, it might have been a Rustin parent that went onto the ice....some of the Unionville people have something on video....but then again, it could have been someone from the rink because Bud D., along with several rink people and managers, were on the ice grabbing kids too, trying to stop everything and help, so at this point no one really knows who was on the ice with the kids, but I do know for a fact, no Unionville parent went onto the ice!

I agree, this is why schools around here do not want to support ice hockey! do you have this crap going on at any other high school sport?

Yes, this unfortunatly does happen in other sports. Stop by and watch a rival basketball game sometime. I have seen cases where fans were refused admission because a confrontation with gangs, weapons etc. was anticipated.

It's the nature of the beast that some kids have to act like animals. Normally these are the kids with little to no skill trying to be seen in front of their screaming classmates. They have to get on the score sheet one way or the other.

Its actually a catch-22. ADs say they can't support ice hockey because of the fan behavior but the fans would not be acting as poorly if the game were school sanctioned with school representatives there and the students had school repercussions to worry about.

Absolutely true! Holy Ghost packs the stands with 300-500 fans at home games at Grundy. The fans are loud and active, but are rarely out of hand. Why? Because it's a school sanctioned varsity sport. The A.D. is at games as well as teachers and school adminastrators and the students while tempted to get rowdy know that they need to be on their best behavior.

Those HGP fans may be saint-like at home, but they were pretty vulgar at Hatfield last year for the HGP La Salle play-off game. Best I could tell there was minimal teachers and school administration there. The BS chant and A Hole chants both sprung up during the game. I'm not saying go out to the game and sit on your hands, but at least some sort of social decorum should be in effect. Think of the ten and twelve year olds who go to the rink and have dreams and aspirations of playing varsity high school hockey or even beyond. Those kids you want going home with memories and dreams of someday skating in a play-off game with the stands packed, not of the students and adults screaming profanity at each other, the officials, and / or the other team.

I never said they were saints....I just said that for the most part they are well behaved for a large group.

I didn't mean that as an attack on HGP. I was trying to illustrate the point for more security / administrators / moderators. I can only speak of La Salle games, because that's where I graduated from (17 years ago, mind you) and I can say they are generally behaved. I can tell you every game I see them play at Hatfield I always see Tony Resch, the AD, as the first person in the door. I've also seen Resch sprint into the stands at the first sight of any sort of outburst. He has help of the parents and administrators who attend the games. They seem just as proud of their conduct as they are the team they're putting on the ice. That may all change in a couple of weeks when I go down to Class of 23 to see them play SJP, but for the most part they are well behaved. The play-off game against HGP had La Salle administrators and parents trying to control the HGP student section, which did number roughly 300 - 500 students, with little success. The point of this is not to point fingersl; the point of this is to show that this sort of nonsense really has to be controlled for the 85-90% of the crod who wants to go to a game to support their school and see good hockey.

Thats about the most absurd thing I've ever heard. I sat with one of the HGP Fathers and there was 50-100 Holy Ghost Kids tops. There were far more LaSalle fans since that is their home rink. I do believe LaSalle fans picked out players on HGP and verbally abused them through out the whole game. I have been at games where HGP kids have gotten just as out of hand as judge or ryan kids but I've been at LaSalle SJP football games where kids from both schools have been yelling some of the raunchiest things I have ever heard. Not to pick sides but saying there were 300-500 HGP kids there is not nearly accurate.
