La Salle 7
Malvern 3

I thought La Salle controlled most of the even strength play, but had a steady stream of players to the penalty box in stints during the game. I didn't think it was the best officiating I've ever seen. Lots of ticky tack calls. Two of malverns goals came on 5 on 3 power plays. I think La Salle's scorers were Berkle (2), Cruice (2), Denczi (2), and Tyson, although that may be wrong. Malvern's goals were hard to tell because all three came from goal mouth scrambles. Berkle scored 12 seconds in to put La Salle up right away - two power strides and a head fake and it was in the back of the net. He scored a similar goal in the third. Pyne was solid in goal and had a highlight glove save on a pseudo breakaway when Oates walked down the slot on a turnover. The game was 2-1 after one and 3-2 going into the third. highlight of the night was La Salle scoring a goal in the third where all five guys on the ice touched the puck within about 10 seconds. it crossed the center of Malvern's zone three times on one touch passes.

your evalauation was dead on . lasalle was clearly the better squad, faster and deeper. bad penalties by lasalle and determined effort kept the game close but in the end it was a good win for lasalle. you also correct in saying the highlight was the fourth goal where everyone touched the puck. in the end it was schmidt who rammed it home off a beautiful feed from denczi and tyson. next is the mt.st. charles tournament we'll see what happens.

I did have one more thing to add - while Pascal is still La Salle's top defenseman, I've been very impressed with Varley's play. I saw him a little bit as a freshman last year and he seemed half a step slow, like he was thinking rather than reacting. In the two games I've seen this year (Delbarton and Malvern Prep) he has been the 1A to Pascal's 1. He logs a ton of ice time and is solid on the back line.

varley has really developedinto a solid defenseman. physical with a real edge to his game, he plays well in all situations both on this team and the u18 team despite being a 92. i also believe laessig doesnot get enough credit. calm with the puck and solid positionally he always seems t obe out there in clutch situations. tonight, though, pynne was a difference maker and their best d-man.

I think Laessig is a more creative player, more finesse. He has a lot of stick moves and sees the ice and distributes well. Varley I think though has developed into more of a complete defenseman, and the way he's running the power play is especially impressive. the transformation from last year to this year in his confidence and ability is amazing.

Yea, I would agree that Pascal is Lasalle's top defenseman, then its a toss up between Laessig and Varley, with Varley gaining alot of speed.

The thing with Varley is you really dont notice him that much, which is good for a defenseman. His game isnt the smoothest or the prettiest, but he is very solid back there. Good size for a sophomore too.

3-2 Lasalle going into the 3rd. Shots were fairly even 26-22 Lasalle.

What do you think, is Lasalle creating the model for other scores to follow in the not too distant future? Could be a good compromise to a split season, having high school take over midget major hockey in the area.

It should. There is no reason for split season not to take over, especially at the midget major level. Theres enough good high school teams in the area, and they could be much better if more resources were put into the programs.

In a development that might be good for the Explorers, Delbarton School, who they tied earlier this year 3-3, was able to go up to Rhode island Wednesday night and beat Bishop Hendricken, defending Rhode Island State champ, 6-2. Maybe La Salle can go up to Mt. St. Charles next week and turn some heads like they did last year. i think it's being proven that the better teams from NJ and PA can really play with the big boys in the Northeast. It's starting to become the time that the big boys from the Northeast come down to play games in our backyard.
