Hi All,

Someone might want to talk to Nick Russo at Ice Line on stories about the "States" Trophies. In the past the East was delinquent on paying their share of the bill for the trophies. As I understand it the East's financial obligation has been taken care of which should allow East teams to possesss the trophies for the year that they win it. Maybe the Westies don't want to see a blank spot at the Mellon arena...

I heard rumors that someone from the Henderson
Warriors had a Mission Impossible plan that included subterfuge, pyrotechnics, and a lights out kidnapping of the Cup with a mysterious return of the Cup on the High School steps. We should have given WC East the details....darn.

All kidding aside, I agree with Matt. Negotiations need to start now for next year.

By the way ice ice baby, was there a guy running around with white cotten gloves on furiously scrubbing the grimy fingerprints of the winners off the precious cup?

He was not there, due to a death in the family from what I understand.

This year I was standing next to Kenny Haas when he offered a $1000.00 deposit for each trophy (should the East win any of them) That went nowhere as well.

This issue should be addressed NOW by the East. It seems that every year we (The East) wait until the day before states to make an issue of this and every year the results are the same.

I think there needs to be something in writing that allows the winner of the Trophy to have their trophy for the calander year, or we have to protest by not going...how else do we get the point across that this won't fly anymore?

Another solution is that the East purchases replica trophies and allows the teams to take them for the Calander year.

BTW, the West teams don't get the trophy if they win it either.

The fact that this simple matter can't be worked out is a testament to the pathetic and petty egos of the individuals involved on both sides. Egos reign supreme in both halves of the state. its never as one sided as the other side would make you think.

Well, of course it's the adults!! We can't expect a delegation of sophomores to make the deal! We DO need to start well in advance to fix this for next year, so that each winning team (East OR West) gets the trophy for the year. As Matt said, if it can be managed with the Stanley Cup, it can be managed with these. If volunteers are needed for a group to address this, put me on the list!

after being denied the trophy in 2003, in pitsburgh in 2004 we just took it and kept in for the year. it was displayed in our school as it should be. we did have to place a deposit on it of 1000.00. for those of you that think that there are 2 sides that have equal merit, think again. it is petty to keep a hard earned trophy from 15, 16,17, 18 year old players because you are afraid it will be damaged. the value of each players equipment that they wear each game is worth more than the trophy.
why would you expect the west to follow any agreement regarding who gets to keep the trophy even if one is made. it will be handled like the move of the game to a neutral site. if the west wins they will keep the trophy, as soon as the east wins, the agreement will change. the western leaders are bullies.

Then we need to push back. Harder than they do. I taught my son that when he was about 10, as did my father teach me. It works.

Can we just go over their heads and buy the trophy outright, and let the winners take the trophy? I think that would solve the problem because it would tecnically be ours (the east), and they would no longer have a say in this matter.

I think all the leagues in the East should pay for and purchase a second set of trophies, with money also from the west since the east also helped pay for those trophies. We should then approach the Flyers about a trophy case at the Wachovia Center. Put the trophies on display at the Wachovia Center (they are never given to the winning team to take with them, they will get distroyed). A replica smaller trophy should be given out to the winning team, for them to keep, and to be put in the school trophy case. How cool would it be to see you kids name, friends name, relatives name, or your name on display at the Wachovia Center. Think that would help promote high school hockey? We should do this whether the west agrees to help with the cost or not. The trophy case should be visible from all sides so that the names of all the teams on the trophy can be seen.

PS

There should be a trophy case for the three Flyers Cup Trophies and a seperate case for the three State Championship Trophies.

Nick,

Those solutions sound like a great idea...How to put it in motion? Maybe bring it up at the league meetings, I think there will be a bunch between now and the start of next season. The big question is who will pick up the ball and run with it? What do you think Matt? I would be willing to help (uh oh).

I think pez might have the right idea. If the West wants to keep the trophies they somehow manage to hold on to (I still don't get how they physically manage that) in mothballs all year, let 'em stay in mothballs. If we bought new trophies and each year the winners, East or West, took the trophies, that would simply make the West and their symbolic trophies superfluous. I love it!
If this sounds like an idea, how would we go about getting the agreement of all of the East leagues participating in the FC? Is there a list of contacts or something? Seriously...this would break down to a cost of maybe $50 per team, one time!
