In the poll question, where is Greg Tinkoff, the goalie for kennett. He logged major minutes, was league leader in GAA, and among the best for SV%. Also, in the best of three series v. henderson he only let up 3 goals to a high power offense
mandell your goalie and your team have done a good job this year and unfortunately fell short of flyers cup and the league championship, but i do think its time that you stop believing that ridley and its players(boraske) are so amazing, i believe the poll picked the right goalies with the exception of a few and that all the teams picked to flyers cup were correct also. But i do indeed think that your goalie was not of the caliber of goalies to win the goalie of the year honors. he is a good goalie dont get me wrong but uncomparable to those of pyne, johnson, gray, mccullough, and even tinkoff who should deifnately be on that poll over boraske.
Boraske is fabulous. But I have had first hand experience of Chris McCullough and we won the league for springfield. They have some good players but he was incredible all playoffs and made some incredible saves in the finals to win the games for them.
I'm not going to jump to my own defense on a message board, I think that's kind of silly but hockeyfan, I will ask that before you pass judgment on my abilities vs those of other top goaltenders from this area, compare Ridley to these teams these other goaltenders are playing for.
We are not nearly as talented as any of them, and the truth of the matter is the goalies with better teams will have better numbers, and these are the kids, in general, that get recognized by magazines like Breakaway, or newspapers, etc.
Tinkoff beat me twice in the DVHL this year, one 2 to 1 and another time 3-2. We both played very well as far as I can remember and I'd certainly say he's a good goalie. I can't speak for whether he or I is more talented but to say that we are "uncomparable" is certainly unfair.

In fairness to myself.....I believe Kenny Wochele was on the Breakaway All-Freshman team, while playing for Ridley and having a G.A.A of over 6.00, so it isnt fair when you say all we look at is the numbers, I can't vouch for other papers, but I do attend High School hockey games every night of the week. Numbers do matter, but I think I can pick out who the best goalies are, just by watching them play.

I did say, in general, Matt, I know there have been exceptions and I didn't mean to imply you do not know high school hockey or its goaltenders. You have to agree though, since you've seen so many games over the years, that again in general, the goalies who end getting the recognition are the goalies who play for the winning teams. These goalies of course are an important part in these winning teams, and for that deserve credit. But the goalies who are good enough on their own, just without the best support, often get passed by because their numbers, and sometimes even the games you may have seen them play, are not their best simply because the team in front of them is not the best.

In my opinion, good goalies having good seasons are on good teams especially good defensive teams like LaSalle and Kennett. Players like Wochele and Max Zubriski last year with Upper Darby are exceptions. Goalies like Boraske and Cedric Brown of Haverford School who may not be of the caliber of Pyne, Gray, and Johnson certainly should be included with others like Tinkoff, McCullough, Hazelton, and Stewart.
Like I said, there are only room for nine on the Poll questionaire, If I had more room I would have added Hazelton, Brown, Boaraske, Tinkoff, Begley, O'Neill, Sullivan, Burriss, Ketterer, Meuheller, Vocanturo and others.
A point that some people overlook is, this award is given to the best goalie in High School hockey BASED on what he does for his High School hockey team.
What club team you play for or how great you did for your club team is meaningless to me. If I gave it the Best goalie based on which club team he played for and how well he did there, it wouldnt really be a HS award.
My point is....if you are one of the best goalies around (based on club hockey) and you dont parley that into High School success.... "how good you are" isnt going to hold much weight. If I did it that way, I would be giving the award based on reputation not based on High School performance.
Just based on 'Skill level" Shawn Ketterer of North Penn is maybe the best goalie i've seen this year. His numbers were down this year and his team didn't have much success, should he be Goalie of the year?
I have always measured a combination of Skill, team success and personal stats when determining player and goalie of the year.

I agree club hockey should have nothing to do with this award, and I don't remember saying it should. I was merely responding to someone who placed myself miles behind some other goalies, that had nothing to do with our debate.
There really is no controversy, we're just discussing the criteria for the award and what it takes to earn a nomination. It seems the way Matt judges is fair and there's really no other way to do it, I just think it's unfortunate that good goalies, anywhere not just here on Breakaway, often get overlooked simply because their team isn't that great.
We might as well agree to disagree if you don't share that sentiment, Matt.

I agree Boraske33, But I dont wanna say "overlooked" because I do look...my decision may be based partially on team success, so a goalie might be "passed over" (for a lack of better words) because of team record or lesser stats, but I dont think I overlook anyone.
If I saw a goalie that I absolutely thought was better than anyone else, but he played on a bad team with a losing record, I would still consider him for goalie of the year. If I decide to go with someone else....it isnt because I overlooked him, its because I passed on him.
Aces12.....NO!
