After losing 4 underclassmen to New England Prep Schools and Juniors, rumor has it LaSalle has lost another one. Junior Connor Varley, expected to leave LaSalle after this year for a New England Prep School, has already left LaSalle to attend his public school North Penn. Varley is playing for the Jr. Flyers u18 team this year so no word whether he will be playing for North Penn or not.
I would be willing to bet money had a lot to do with his decision to leave LaSalle. LaSalle's tuition alone is over $13,000 a year. Factor in costs for their hockey and I am sure that is well over $3,000 a year and then tack on the cost of playing for the Junior Flyers u18 team and I am sure the grand total would be close to $25,000 give or take.

Maybe he is playing for NP and money is not an issue.......rumor is there were a couple of new faces at NP practice this week and they are playing for free.....not sure who they are but I will find out.
I know the Varley's, money is definitely not an issue. And also Connor is not looking to go to prep schools, he is more looking into the Junior route. He is a real solid defenseman and a definite tough loss for LaSalle if true.

Yes they do. Kid is a 10th grader. I am hearing the 2 new kids are a goalie from the 94 Jr. Flyers and his older brother who plays for the 93 Ice Dogs. Moved here from NY. I heard they are getting their fees wavied to play.

You might want to pick up this months edition of Philadelphia Magazine. NP ranks 21st out of the top 50 local public school districts. The last time the magazine did public and private in one list LaSalle was 23rd out of 40 schools. NP did not make the list

Back to the hockey – which program Lasalle or NP will have the stronger team this season and what is the difference if any in time commitment to the team (such as practice schedules, non-league schedules and travel)?

Lasalle will still be strong. The program is huge. They wont be nearly as good as last season or the season before, but I would imagine they will be similar to their team 3 years ago. Theyll finish in the top 4.
Looks like North Penn could be really strong, should be a contender at the AA level.
i saw an interesting fact as it relates to north penn . in grade 9-11 they have nearly 1700 male students , a number which nearly doubles any other area school(cbsouth #2 at 900) with this kind of gross inequality in numbers has there been any discussion of moving north penn to AAA as they are in every other sport?
They should be. With the change in rules and having everything align (rulewise that is) with the west, there should be AAA public schools. There are certainly AAA schools out west. With the cycle (I feel) swinging back to fewer kids going to expensive private school, and staying with the public school, it would only be fair. Why should the private schools only have to answer to what is fair and competitive, it should apply to all.

So I am very curious as to why you think the trend is away from private schools. LaSalle had over 600 applicants and accepted 275 incoming freshman as always. Or are you just talking about hockey players? Which would be even more interesting as to why you think that is.
Varley is not on North Penn's roster on the Suburban website.
Is he not playing with them? Their team looks to be very good on paper regardless. They have to be considered a frontrunner for the AA Flyers Cup, and if they do in fact add Varley it will only make them stronger.
