Nice to see that current issue of Breakaway has brought up the issue regarding High School split season. New York State has had split season for Midgets for years. I don't understand why the rink owners would say they are going to loose money when you are only talking about split season for Midgets not at every level. Also in other areas you play club league games during the week, so maybe that is something to look into. Having players play both club and high school is becoming more of an issue in the local area. If the ICSHL schedules high school games during the week, there is a conflict with players that play club hockey. It is one thing one your high school team is supported by tax dollars but when parents are paying for both club and high school and the players are being asked where their loyality lies with their high school team or their club team issues arise. You have high school coaches saying you have to be at the week games no club practice, club coaches are saying you can't miss club practice. Why not contact some of the other high school leagues and see how their split season works, it must be working if other States have scheduled their high school like this for years. Some parents have already said this season it is only one team next year. Time for Split Season

Our intent was to get input from a local rink owner as well as people from Massachusettes and Colorado. Unfortunately they didnt return our attempts to get in touch with them.

Matt - I gotta ask, why Mass and CO? Why not Ohio and New York as both these states border PA and, more importantly, are probably more comparable on average to the quality of PA's teams.
Furthermore, both OH and NY have VARSITY and CLUB High School programs - each with somewhat different rules. Just wondering.... |

Only because we had a "Contact" in Co and Mass....no other reason.

I just read the article on the split season in Breakaway Monthly. Frank Seravilli did a great job with the article and made a lot of valid arguments for the split season. As a former player, coach and now a current teacher I can see the argument for a split season. First and foremost the players' education is the most important. The percentage going on to play professional hockey is very small so their education is paramount. With that being said, as a parent, I wouldn't want my child to be on the ice 7 days a week until late hours every night. Hell, the pros and collegiate players aren't on the ice 7 days a week. (I'm sorry, but their education comes first.) How are they supposed to function in school the next day? In addition, the season goes from August until April which can burn the players out and they are more susceptible to injury and illness. I have meet plenty of club players who didn't play hockey after they graduated because they were just burnt out. I think the split season will add to the level of competition and schools sponsoring hockey. I have spoken to numerous school administrators over the years about sponsoring hockey. Their arguments are the long season and lack of control at the rinks. I have attended enough high school football games on Friday and Saturday nights to know that hockey would draw a big crowd if the games were on the weekends. As a player, nothing was more exciting to me than to see the stands filled and cheering for our high school team. I believe John Graves didn't reply to Frank's request for the article because he is afraid of the split season. He could possibly lose some money and control. The split season needs to happen in order for hockey to grow in the area. USA Hockey said the ratio of practice to games should be 3 to 1. The split season makes sense. Take a look at the article from USA Hockey asking "How much is too much?" "8 Days A Week" |

Although Mr. Seravilli did a good job with the "Split Decision" article. IMHO, there are many salient points that were missed and/or overlooked. Something I might be happy to add to this thread if there is interest. Either way, job well done bringing these things to light.

I will cite what I know about Ohio's "split season"
1) OH recognizes ice hockey as a varsity sport and has one (1) level/championship - something that has been long debated. Please note, there are several club leagues within the state who do not abide by the same rules. I plan on addressing the "varsity" teams. 2) OH still has full season Midgets - these players can only play on their full season Midget team and cannot play HS ice hockey. These teams are typically high level AAA teams (playing out of Detroit for most of the season) or a "A/AA" Midget team comprised of players that choose not to (or cant due to talent) play for their high school teams. SIMPLY PUT - ONE TEAM PER SEASON (hence the split season). 3) Defined season: Coaching can begin on Nov 2, 2007 this year; First Game on or after Nov 23 (with 4 scrimmages or three scrimmages and one exhibition game on or after Nov 16); MAXIMUM game limit 18 (tournaments with 8 or less teams = 1 game; 9 or more teams = 2 games); Last possible day of season AND COACHING CONTACT March 9; State Tournament (4 districts) starts Feb 11 thru March 1; 4) National Ice Hockey Federation Rules (no USA Hockey!!) 5) After July 31 through JUNE 1, NO MORE THAN 3 PLAYERS from the SAME HIGH SCHOOL can compete on the same "CLUB TEAM"; HS COACHES CANNOT HAVE CONTACT WITH PLAYERS FROM THEIR TEAMS during the same period, and cannot coach any "club" team with players of his/her school (or something like that) 6) 78 RECOGNIZED VARSITY ICE HOCKEY TEAMS (44 teams in Metro-Cleveland, 17 in Metro-Columbus/Cincinatti, 17 in Metro-Toledo). The system in OH works. The biggest debate in recent years has been the question of whether or not to add a 2nd division. It does not look likely that this will happen anytime soon. |

I think it is a great article. But here in the Philly area---the Flyers Cup Committee and the local club leagues are not for it. I truly believe that you will get more quality players both from high school and club to play the split season. Hey club hockey only charge $500 for Midgets and school charge $500-700. boy doesn't that work out to be about the same or less than what everyone is currently paying? The rinks would not loose revenue since the school will pick up more practice slots.

Who have you talked to from the Flyers Cup Committe or is that just your assumption?

this was brought up 2 years ago at the DVHL meeting and apparently some of the guys affiliated with Hershey are also affiliated with the Flyers Cup committee at that time. They said no. Just repeating what i heard!

Where are you playing? U18 A & AA is over $2500 and HS is @ $1000. Breakaway even had a good article last season breaking down the cost of HS hockey in PA and I think it also came in around $1000 or more. I haven't read the new article yet so I can't really comment, other than that. |

There is one rep from the Hershey area, the CPIHL President, on the Flyers Cup Committee. He has one of seven votes, so his opinion on a split season would not be the deciding factor. Even if the FC committee voted for a split season that doesnt mean it would get done. It is in the hands of "club" hockey and the Atlantic district....not in the hands of the Flyers Cup committee. |

sorry, should have clarified what i meant as far as the fees are concerned. I meant that if we did a split season, look how much it would cost. Why would you charge full season prices for club if you are only playing from August till the beginning of November. so the cost would be cut back. So yea the clubs would not be charging $1600 to $2500 let alone the travel costs, tournament costs would not be there either.
