I think this topic should have its own thread. Anyway, I know the PIAA rule are that if a kid switches high schools he has to wait one calender year to participate in a sport. To my knowledge this rule does not apply to kids who move from any other state into PA. Also, I heard that a kid on Wissahickon transfered to Pennridge in the middle of the season last year and wanted to play hockey for Pennridge. Flyers Cup committee said he moved for non-hockey reasons (parents divorced I'm guessing) and kept Pennridge Flyers Cup eligible.

It was Quakertown to Pennridge, and he transfered in the begining of the school year.

It was a much more personal reason for that and it is still hotly debated at SHSHL meetings

Matt,
Also, if a kid transfers from a private school BACK to the school district in which he resides, I believe there are no repurcussions (or is that concussions |

The PIAA is in the midst of changing its Transfer rules--probably be in effect for next year. It will require a one year "sit out" from varsity sports for any transfer after the start of 9th grade, unless there is a change of primary family residence (and a few other legal things). The transferring player can still participate in JV sports, and does get to attend that new school of his choice for its academic or religous values. This change would remove any need to find "athletic intent" in the transfer and it has a number of interesting ramifications: 1. billeted Jr players would be sitting that 1 year, too (no change in primary family residence). 2. taking that tempting "recruiting" offer as 9th grader becomes a bit riskier--if it doesn't work out, you will miss a year of varsity when you transfer back to your original school district or to another school. 3. puts a real premium on "recruiting" 8th graders. How feeder schools fit into this new rule is yet to be explained. 4. With the PCL schools achieving full PIAA membership in 2008, how will that affect who is a "private" or "public" school? That being said, until all the local HS hockey organizations agree to be governed by the PIAA rules--and stand by it--its just words. Lastly, NJ just changed its transfer rule from a 30-day sit-out to a full 1-year. This brings NJ in line with the proposed PA rule, which itself is copied from similar transfer rules in a number of other states. We'll see what impact that has on the (north) NJ HS hockey scene.
